Community Outreach Visit to The Wisani Old Age Home

Posted on July 28, 2023

The population of older adults is growing rapidly and more older adults are living in old age homes. While these facilities provide care and support for older adults, they can also be lonely and isolating. Community outreach programs can play a significant role in bringing joy and companionship to the residents of an old age home.

When The Department of Library Services (DLS) visits old age homes, it is beneficial for both the residents and the library and its staff members. For the residents, the visit provides an opportunity to engage with others and participate in activities that they may not have access to otherwise. For the library, the visit can be an opportunity to connect with the community and promote library services. Additionally, the visit can help the DLS to fulfil its mission of serving the community. As part of the University of Pretoria Community Outreach initiatives, the DLS had the privilege to visit The Wisani Old Age Home in Hammanskraal on 9 June and it was a very enriching and fulfilling experience. Upon our arrival, we were gladly welcomed by the most hospitable staff and manager. We were allowed to run a quick mini-program where we introduced who we are, what we stand for, and most importantly why we were there. The day was full of joy as we interacted with the elderly and managed to give some beanies that we had as a donation. We also surprised the elderly at the home with chocolates and treats. The day was filled with some exciting activities as the members of the home mesmerized us with their singing and dancing and we performed a spontaneous dance for the residents in return.

The managing director, Mrs Bilangulu, is an amazing woman. She is a retired professional nurse who saw a gap in the community of Hammanskraal where the elderly were not well taken care of. She narrated how she spent most of her benefits to build the institution. The only source of income for the home is from social grants, however, she is happy to serve the community of Hammanskraal.

We at the DLS believe that these community outreach visits to old age homes can be a significant contributing factor to the well-being of older adults. Through reading programs, craft activities, and music programs, residents can engage with others and participate in activities that promote social interaction, intellectual stimulation, and creativity. Additionally, the DLS community outreach visits can help the library fulfill its mission of serving the community.
