UP Final-year Motivational and Information Event

Posted on May 24, 2023

The Department of Enrolment and Student Administration (DESA) hosted the UP Final year motivational and information event for prospective postgraduate students on Thursday 9 March 2023 from 16:00 – 20:30 at the Aula and Rautenbach Hall at the Hatfield Main Campus. The Senior Coordinator for the Research Commons, Lesego Makhafola, was invited to give a 10-minute presentation and showcase the products and services that are available to postgraduate students at the library.

Unfortunately, due to the large number of speakers and time constraints, some sections of the programme were cut, including the library presentation. However, fear not, because we were not left out in the cold!

An exhibition space was made available in the Rautenbach Hall and the library participated. Lesego Makhafola from the Research Commons collaborated at this exhibition with Mrs Gerda Ehlers, the Learning Centre Coordinator, and with Mr Thabang Tisane, the Digital Products Specialist. A table was set up with useful library information, as well as some small treats. The presentation that was supposed to be presented earlier was shown on a screen. Students could interact with library staff members and ask questions if they had any.

Several impromptu information literacy training sessions took place during the exhibition. Students were surprised by the vast number of information resources and services that the library has to offer. There were statements that were heard repeatedly, such as “Wow! I didn’t know that”, “I struggled when I could have just come to the library” and “You can do that?” Laughs were exchanged between students and the three colleagues who were part of the exhibition. Numerous photos were taken with Libby, who was the star of the exhibition, and she was asked lots of questions by the students.

Overall, it was a fun experience for all, and an honour and a privilege to be included in the event for the second time. Thank you to the Department of Enrolment and Student Administration (DESA) for remembering that the library is an important entity at the university and has a role in students’ academic success.
