The DLS visited schools in Limpopo to donate books

The DLS Community Outreach focus group initiated a book donation to advise teachers and learners on how to structure a standard school library that will accommodate a book collection. Christine Nel from the University of Pretoria Library, in collaboration with Chipa Maimela, worked with the National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT) to donate reading books to several schools in Limpopo. Ntsako Tshungu, the NRC reading coordinator at NECT also assisted with this initiative.


Chipa Maimela visited the schools to donate the books, and have a discussion about their school library transformation.

 
 
The following schools were visited: 
 
Lekota Secondary School, based at Marobala, Ga Dikgale, Limpopo Province

Grade 12 learners received motivation from Chipa Maimela as well as an introduction to the UP Library. Teachers in attendance included Ms Mongatane responsible for languages, Ms Setati and Mr Moloisi together with several staff members from the school. The Principal, Mr Maluleke Johannes, welcomed the donation and sent words of appreciation to the UP library for the visit. 

 
 
Moraro Primary School, based at Marobala, Ga Dikgale, Limpopo Province
 
The DLS was represented by Chipa Maimela during a visit to Moraro Primary school on 22 August 2022. During this occasion he handed over a book donation and addressed the need for a school library. An introduction to the UP Library and how it can contribute to the learner's reading was shared with the staff. Staff in attendance included the Principal, Mr Mogashoa together with the staff of Moraro Primary responsible for language subjects. Mr Mogashoa welcomed the donation and sent words of appreciation to the UP library for the visit.
 
 
 

Masehlone Primary School, based at Itielene village, Ga Raphahlelo, Limpopo Province

The DLS was represented by Chipa Maimela during a visit to Masehlone Primary school on 23 August 2022. Books were donated and a discussion was had about the school library revival. An introduction to the UP Library and how it can contribute to the learner's reading was presented to the staff. Staff in attendance included the Deputy Principal Mr Ramango together with the staff of Masehlone Primary School responsible for language subjects.

 
 
Nkei Primary School, based at Itielene village, Ga Raphahlelo, Limpopo Province
 
The DLS was represented by Chipa Maimela during a visit to Nkei Primary school on 23 August 2022. He donated books and had a discussion about the school starting a school library. Staff were given an introduction to the UP Library, and Chipa discussed how it can contribute to the learner's reading. The Principal, Mr Chikunde, requested a further workshop. Staff present were Mr Seisa, Mr Molepo, and Ms Mahoma with teacher assistants in attendance as well. The Principal Mr Chikunde welcomed the donation and voiced appreciation.
 
 
 
Mangoako Secondary School, based at Itielene village, Ga Raphahlelo, Limpopo Province
 
The DLS was represented by Chipa Maimela at a visit to Mangoako Secondary school on 23 August 2022 and discussions were had about the need for a formal school library considering the available infrastructure in the school. He introduced the UP Library, and indicated to the staff how the UP Library can contribute to the learner's reading. Staff raised the issue of a lack of library skills, and suggested that a workshop may be needed to ensure that the library initiative gets put into place. Teachers in attendance were Mr Mashapa Kennedy, Mr Molepo, and Mr Selowa. 
 
 
 
Sekgosese High School, based at Senwamokgope Township, Ga Mamaila Village in Limpopo Province
 
The DLS was represented by Chipa Maimela during a visit to Sekgosese Secondary school on 23 August 2022. The discussions were around the need for the revival of the existing abandoned school library considering the available old library at the school. An introduction was given to the UP Library, and this was followed by a discussion on how it can contribute to the restructuring of the current library. The need for a full-time librarian was raised, the lack of library skills was raised, and it was suggested that a workshop may be required to further assist the library refurbishment to take place. Mr Ramantjane was leading the discussion.
