Library Life Pulse Survey Launch

Posted on September 12, 2022

The Department of Library Services (DLS) uses service quality surveys as one of its instruments to collect user input and gain a better understanding of the market to meet the changing needs of the environment. This is also to foster a culture of excellence within the department and to raise awareness about the library's services. For several years, the DLS used the LibQUAL survey; however, the complexity of this survey posed a threat to the validity of the results. In response to this, the DLS launched a new survey instrument that is an international survey administered by the Alterline Research Agency of the United Kingdom.

This survey assesses not only the perceptions of service quality but also a broader variety of themes crucial to establishing the library's impact on the academic community. The survey is straightforward and easy to understand. After the analysis of survey responses has been completed, the agency provides a platform for participating institutions to discuss the findings and provide benchmarking reports against national and international libraries. The survey was open from the 25th of July to the 31st of August 2022.

A variety of marketing strategies were utilised to promote the survey which included the following:

  • Emails from the Market Research Office
  • ClickUP notifications
  • Campus-wide emails
  • Library website and UP portal
  • Tukkievaria notifications
  • Digital screen notifications
  • Social media posts
  • Collaboration from all the UP faculty marketers and campus activation sessions with the assistance of the library interns on the Hatfield, Groenkloof, Prinshof, Onderstepoort, and Mamelodi campuses. The faculty marketers were also enticed to compete for a R1000 prize toward their year-end lunch.

The anticipated completion date for the survey findings report is October 2022. The library Executive Team together with the Quality Management Committee will review the results and develop an improvement plan that will be implemented at the departmental unit level.
