Community outreach and engagement in Hammanskraal

Posted on May 16, 2022

Winter has arrived and as the days gradually become colder, more people need a little warmth and compassion. To contribute to alleviating this need, the Community Engagement and Outreach team from the Department of Library Services, led by Tlou Mathiba, accompanied by Pfano Makhera and Busisiwe Mmalefahlo, visited Tender Loving Care (TLC), an old-age home in Kekana Gardens, Hammanskraal on 12 May.  This retirement home had previously been identified as one of the projects to be supported by the Community Engagement and Outreach Group in 2022.

Winter beanies and four boxes of marshmallows were donated to the elderly and the staff at the home and one granny shouted ‘Imnandi iyaphindwa!’—a request to the team to come back again. The care worker at the home, Sister Flora Lengweng, thanked the University, and the library in particular, for their kind gesture.

We would like to convey our sincere thanks to Christine Nel for the donation of 82 beanies, Tannie Kitty de Lange, a remarkable 86-year-old who knitted them all, and the staff of the Library Marketing and Quality Assurance Unit who donated the marshmallows.
