The Special Collections Book of the Week this week is:

SA April 1994: an Author’s Diary, compiled by Andre Brink.

45 South African authors share their personal experience of the most memorable day in the history of their country, 27 April 1994.

Only a few weeks before election day 1994, letters were dispatched to writers all over the country, requesting them to keep a diary of that day and send it to the publisher as soon as possible after the event, without the advantage of hindsight or lengthy reflection. The occasion, it was felt, represented a unique coincidence of the utterly personal and the public. Here was an opportunity for writers to test their word against, arguably, the most remarkable moment in their history. This book is the result.
