Posted on August 02, 2023

During the June/July holidays of 2023, Kokeso Speco, a construction management student at the Department of Construction Economics, had the incredible opportunity to embark on an enriching journey as a Property Risk Intern at Investec.

As a leading global financial institution renowned for its expertise in private banking, asset management, and specialist banking, Investec presented a unique environment for him to hone his skills and gain invaluable experience in the realm of property risk management. As an intern, his role was centered on assisting the Property Risk team in analysing, assessing, and mitigating potential risks associated with the bank's diverse portfolio of property investments".

This internship promised an immersive and dynamic experience, providing exposure to real-world challenges in the property market while working closely with seasoned professionals. Throughout his time at Investec, he was exposed to a multifaceted range of tasks that pushed him beyond his comfort zone and expanded his knowledge. Collaborating with the Property Risk team, he actively participated in conducting comprehensive risk assessments for ongoing and potential property investments, analysing market trends, and assessing the impact of regulatory changes on property valuations.

He gained hands-on experience in utilizing sophisticated risk modelling tools and financial software, acquiring a deeper understanding of risk management methodologies employed in the banking industry. Working in a fast-paced environment, he had the opportunity to witness the importance of effective communication and teamwork in dealing with intricate financial transactions and property evaluations. Nevertheless, challenges also arose during my internship at Investec. The nature of property risk assessment demands meticulous attention to detail and the ability to navigate through complex data sets. Understanding the nuances of the property market required continuous learning and adapting to ever-changing market conditions.

However, with the guidance and mentorship of colleagues, he was able to overcome these challenges and enhance his problem-solving and analytical abilities, which proved essential in contributing to the team's objectives. Beyond the technical skills, his time at Investec was a transformative period for personal growth. Engaging with professionals from diverse backgrounds and expertise, he developed a deeper understanding of the financial industry and the significance of risk management in safeguarding investments. The internship cultivated a sense of responsibility and professionalism in him, reinforcing the importance of accuracy and ethical decision-making in the world of finance. As he bid farewell to my internship, he left with a profound appreciation for Investec's commitment to nurturing young talent and providing a platform for growth and exploration within the financial sector.
