CIOB Accreditation

Posted on September 11, 2017

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) conducted an international accreditation for the Department of Construction Economics on 11 September 2017.  The four members of the CIOB panel were Mr Alex Copping (University of Bath), Mr Richard Dawe (Plymouth University), Mrs Laura Chinn (CIOB, Education Department, Operations) and Mrs Liezl Botha (CIOB Regional Manager, Africa).

The CIOB panel spent the day at the Department of Construction economics where they had the opportunity to engage with management, staff and students.  They were also taken on a campus tour showcasing our lecture halls, laboratories, tutor rooms, main campus library and other general facilities.

The accreditation visit commenced with the Dean of the EBIT faculty, Prof Sunil Maharaj, who gave a general overview of the University of Pretoria and in particular the mission and vision of the EBIT faculty.  The Head of Department of Construction Economics, Prof Benita Zulch, presented to the panel the current operations of the Department and where it is headed.  Program leaders also had the opportunity to explain what each program (Construction Management, Quantity Surveying and Real Estate) entails and to addressed questions from the CIOB panel.  Subsequent to this the panel engaged with students to get their perspectives and views in the form of an question and answer session.

The CIOB panel conjured in a private meeting to discuss their findings and provide recommendations and feedback.  It is with great delight that our Department can announce that the CIOB awarded us a 5 year international accreditation (2017 to 2022) with immediate effect.
