Yashay Narainsamy

Yashay Narainsamy graduated from the University of Pretoria with a BEng in Civil Engineering in 2015. He then worked at Jones and Wagener Engineering and Environmental Consultants as a tailings engineer before starting at the University of Pretoria as a full-time PhD student in 2021. He holds an MEng degree in geotechnical engineering from the University of Pretoria and is registered as a professional engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa. His masters research involved the investigation of strain compatibility within the limit equilibrium slope stability framework. He used results from a series of triaxial compressions tests and proposed a new factor of safety formulation which assumes uniform mobilised shear strains along the slip surface.

He is currently enrolled for a PhD at the University of Pretoria and is investigating the influence of the suctions induced during routine operations on the static liquefaction resistance of mine tailings. The research to be undertaken will be performed predominantly through field measurements supported by numerical modelling, where the performance of tailings material subjected to wetting and drying cycles will be investigated. Yashay is also taking part in an exchange programme between UP and Imperial College, where he has been given the opportunity to work alongside leading researchers in the field of numerical modelling of unsaturated soils for geotechnical engineering applications.
