New Research Study by UPCTD M.Eng Student on Minibus Taxi Service Patterns in Rustenberg, SA

Posted on April 23, 2025

How much do informal public transport service patterns vary daily? And what could it mean for passengers seeking reliable transport?

Announcing new research tracking variability in minibus taxi service patterns in Rustenburg, South Africa. M.Eng student
Angurini Manaseh used GPS tracking data to measure variations in routes, frequencies, and service areas.

The bottom line:

  • If you live close to an important road with lots of service, you have great taxi accessibility. But...
  • If you live in lower density areas further from main roads, expect highly variable and unpredictable services - sometimes at your doorstep and sometimes requiring long walks, waits, or travel times.

Thank you to Rustenburg Local Municipality and Yarona for partnering in this research.
