Rachel Maritz is currently a senior lecturer at the University of Pretoria (full time from 2003-2012, part time 2012-2014, and full-time again from 2014), lecturing in strategy, general management and international business management for graduate, post graduate and continuing education students in the Department of Business Management. She coordinates and lectures final year BCom Business Management, BCom Business Management honours, Post Graduate Diploma in Integrated Reporting. She has also previously lectured on MPhil courses in Strategy and in Leadership. She served on various management committees within the faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (UP). In addition to normal senior lecturer responsibilities, she was appointed as the Programme manager at the Department of Business Management in 2010. In this capacity she was responsible for managing and overseeing outputs and activities of all subject heads, administrative staff and assistant lecturers in the department. As part time lecturer (from 2012-2014) she lectured in various courses, was responsible for quality control of examination and test papers including language editing of all Afrikaans and English test and examination papers.
She previously consulted and worked with various companies and Government Departments on strategic management issues, including strategy development (including Annual Performance Plans and Operational plans), scenario-planning, audit of strategy, monitoring and evaluation of strategy, implementation of strategy, industry analysis and compilation of competitive intelligence newsletters and various business reports. Rachel has also previously been in the employ of Telkom Ltd for the period 1997 to 2003.
She worked as senior consultant: Internal Audit from 1997 until 2000. In this capacity she was involved in planning, coordinating and executing audits across business units.
She was appointed manager for competitive intelligence in the Marketing and Sales Business Unit in 2000. In this capacity, she was responsible for developing strategies for each of the Telkom customer segments, by performing in depth competitive analysis, developing strategic alternatives and testing these through scenario planning. She was also responsible for conducting workshops with top management of customer segments in order to develop a comprehensive strategic simulation model. In addition, she was responsible for developing strategy implementation frameworks based on the strategic simulation model.
In Telkom, she was rewarded a Name in Lights award twice for recognition of performance excellence.
