NAS Women: Don’t be afraid of making mistakes or of failure
Women’s Month: Focus on Dr Ronishree Mangwanda

Q: Job title and in which department/research entity do you work?
A:
I am the Programme Manager of the Forest Molecular Genetics research programme in the Department of Biochemistry, Genetics and Microbiology.

Q: What has been the highlight of your career?
A:
In 2016, I was selected to be part of the #UP250k campaign. It was a privilege to be part of such a momentous occasion in the history of UP. It was also the same year I had graduated with my PhD in Biotechnology.

Q: What inspires you?
A:
I choose to take inspiration from all of the people around me. For example, I have learnt how to enjoy the simplest things in life from my toddler and how to tackle complex work situations from my colleagues. Everyone you come across can teach you something if you are willing to listen, learn and grow.

Q: What challenges have you experienced in your career?
A:
Discovering my career path has been a challenge. Sometimes, the path you initially embark on is not meant for you, and it takes strength to go against the expectations. However, I have learnt that recognising what you don’t enjoy doing is just as important as knowing what you want.

Q: What message do you have for the youth of South Africa?
A:
Don’t be afraid of making mistakes or of failure. Those may turn out to be the most significant learnings you may have. “Every failure is a step to success – William Whewell.”
