Welcome to the Department of Biochemistry, Genetics and Microbiology (BGM)
Vision
To be a leading African center of excellence in biochemistry, genetics, and microbiology that produces innovative research, develops skilled scientists, and addresses critical challenges in health, agriculture, and biotechnology for the benefit of South Africa and the global community.
Mission
The Department of Biochemistry, Genetics and Microbiology is committed to teaching and learning at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level.
At the undergraduate level, we aim to provide high-quality, research-informed education in biochemistry, genetics, and microbiology that equips students with strong theoretical foundations, practical laboratory skills, and critical thinking abilities. We prepare graduates for diverse careers in agriculture, healthcare, biotechnology, research, and industry while fostering scientific curiosity and ethical responsibility.
At the postgraduate level the department strives to cultivate the next generation of researchers and scientific leaders through rigorous postgraduate training that combines advanced coursework with cutting-edge research. We mentor MSc and PhD students to become independent scientists capable of addressing complex biological questions and contributing original knowledge to their fields.
Research excellence requires conducting internationally competitive research across our three core disciplines—biochemistry, genetics, and microbiology—addressing fundamental biological questions and applied challenges relevant to African contexts. We foster interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation to advance understanding in areas including molecular biology, genomics, microbial diversity, disease mechanisms, and biotechnological applications. thereby, translating our research and expertise into solutions that benefit society, contributing to improved health outcomes, sustainable agriculture, food security, and biotechnology development. We engage with industry, government, and community partners to ensure our work has meaningful real-world impact.
