DNA Sanger Sequencing Facility
I am the assistant manager and senior lab technician in the DNA Sequencing Facility with BSc (hons) Genetic and a Master of Public Health degree (MPH). I am responsible for managing the daily operation of the facility which involves among others:
Sample management: Manage the daily running capacity on the Genetic Analyzers (ABI3130xl and ABI3500xl) and ensure production of good quality sequencing and fragment analysis data.
Instrument maintenance and management:Clean, setup capillaries and to replenish consumables in the Genetic Analyzers ABI3130xl and ABI3500xl. Extensively troubleshoot on the sequencers when things go wrong before contacting the suppliers, Life Technologies.
Administrative duties: Register new users on SeqServe (the online booking system) after acquiring research leader’s authorization. In the absence of the line manager, contact and notify clients if and when unexpected problems are experienced also to arrange for the emergency repairs of instrument and perform calibrations and tests after repairs.
Software assistance and troubleshooting: Help clients with software queries relating to fragment analysis (microsatellite studies) data and online booking queries.
Training Duties: Train and supervise junior laboratory technicians.
