The Department of Biochemistry, the first department of its kind in South Africa, was established in 1940 meaning that in 2017, it was in its 77th year of operation. The Department was originally part of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Pretoria, but co‐administered with the National State Department of Agricultural Technical Services. In the early 1970s the Faculty was fully integrated into the University of Pretoria. Between 1975 and 1993 the Department also served in the Faculty of Natural Sciences. In 1994 it became part of the Faculty of Biological and Agricultural Sciences. Since 1999 the Department of Biochemistry has been part of the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (NAS). Between 1999 and 2008 it was part of the School of Biological Sciences in NAS. At the beginning of 2018, the Department of Biochemistry merged with the former Departments of Genetics and of Microbiology and Plant Pathology to create the new Department of Biochemistry, Genetics and Microbiology.
