14th Annual Internal Audit Student and Networking Conference

Posted on May 17, 2012

The Student Conference forms part of the professional development of Internal Audit students and the objective of the Conference is to provide students with a networking opportunity with well-known companies, practitioners, other students and educators. The theme for this year’s Conference was “Governance”.
The Student Conference would not have been possible without the support of sponsors. Eskom was once again the main sponsor. Their continuous support of the BCom Internal Auditing programme at the University of Pretoria is greatly appreciated.

During a two-hour networking session, 218 BCom Internal Auditing students from the University of Pretoria, 27 students from Vaal University of Technology and two students from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), had the opportunity to meet with representatives of well-known companies and practitioners, namely BDO, CQS, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, IIA(SA), Imperial, KPMG and PWC, who exhibited on the day and whose representatives engaged with the students.

Speakers at the event also shared their practical experiences with students. The day started with Prof YIN Ping, Vice-President of Nanjing Audit University in the People’s Republic of China. He shared his views on collaboration and gave some background on his university’s Internal Audit programme. Mr Thokozani Sihlangy, Chairperson of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s Student Body, shared his experience as an Internal Audit student at NMMU.

Mr Jaco Pretorius, Associate Director: Sustainability and Integrated Reporting at Deloitte, addressed integrated reporting, asking the question; “are companies embracing the concepts?”, while Ms Tsidi Molapo, Senior Manager: Governance and Training at AngloGold Ashanti, entertained all delegates with her war stories, addressing “Governance versus Changing Risks – It is a moving target”!

The keynote address during the Conference was presented by Mr Theo Botha, the well-known South African shareholder activist.

The day ended with yet another networking opportunity for the students, after which they had some leisure time at the Valley of Waves!
