Message from the HOD

The Department of Auditing was established in 2001 with the initial objectives of developing the disciplines of auditing and internal auditing, to make contributions to the different professional programmes related to external and internal auditing, and to focus on associated research and postgraduate studies. The department is involved in various community and continuing education projects; serves a diverse group of approximately 2 000 students and partakes in various research projects as and when the opportunity arises.

The BCom specialising in Financial Management Sciences programme and the BComHons specialising in Internal Auditing programme at UP continue to be jointly endorsed by the IIA Global in the USA as a Centre for Internal Audit Excellence in the Academic Alliance programme. This is an achievement the Department and all its stakeholders are rightly proud of.

Most teaching activities are aimed at equipping and developing students for the various professional designations related to the disciplines of external and internal auditing and include, amongst others, the international Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), the South African Chartered Accountant (CA[SA]), and Registered Auditor (RA). Recently, the undergraduate degrees to which the department contributes have also been endorsed by the South African Institute of Government Auditors as a gateway to the Registered Government Auditor (RGA[SA]) designation. Quality and the maintenance of high academic standards form the basis of all our programmes, courses, and research activities.

At the postgraduate level, the department also offers the Postgraduate Diploma in Forensic Accounting, which is in high demand. In addition, we also offer two Master’s programmes – one in Fraud Risk Management and one in Governance and Assurance, as well as a PhD in the broader field of Auditing.

Head: Department of Auditing
