Unit for Forensic Accounting transferred to the Department of Auditing

Posted on May 25, 2012

The Unit for Forensic Accounting came into being in 1999 and since then operated successfully in the Department of Accounting under the able guidance of Mr Danie du Plessis.

Although the idea of transferring the Unit from the Department of Accounting to the Department of Auditing has been raised several times over the past two years between the Heads of the Departments of Accounting, Prof Johan Oberholster and Auditing, Prof Herman de Jager, a final decision came about after the recent Senate Conference hosted by the Principal of the University of Pretoria, Prof Cheryl de la Rey.

In reaching this decision, factors such as study guidance for mini-dissertations and the like were taken in consideration. So would study guidance be much more effective and efficient in the Department of Auditing, since there are quite a number of staff members that could assist, which would in all probability lead to increased research output. Meanwhile, all study guidance in the Department of Accounting would have to be undertaken by the existing two academic staff members of the Unit for Forensic Accounting.

Interdisciplinary research between Auditing and Forensic Accounting could also lead to increased research output, which would be in line with the stated objectives of the University of Pretoria. In view of the risks involved with succession planning and contingency plans, UP’s renewed research drive in its 2025 Strategic Plan and the potential for greater research outputs in the Department of Auditing arising from the better alignment of the two disciplines, it was concluded that it would be in the best interest of the University of Pretoria if the Unit for Forensic Accounting is transferred to the Department of Auditing.
