This MPhil degree is the first course work master’s degree in South Africa specialising in the field of internal auditing.

There is an increased demand for professional internal auditors because of the increased focus on the role of internal auditors as stakeholders. These auditors are putting pressure on organisations to optimise performance and reach sustainable business success. The mentioned demand is especially at senior level, where individuals are required to hold their own in various other spheres within the organisation. The Internal Auditing programme offered by the Department of Auditing has been accredited as a centre of excellence in the IIA Inc’s Internal Auditing Educational Partnership (IAEP) programme – one of only five in the world. The MPhil Internal Auditing degree builds on this programme, offering a world-class postgraduate qualification for senior internal auditors.

Entrance to the degree is based on internal audit experience and the tertiary and professional qualifications of candidates. A multi-disciplinary approach will be followed, due to the diverse nature and applicability of internal auditing. The degree will be offered part-time over a two-year period and the education method will consist of a virtual classroom as well as contact sessions. The examinations will be in the form of case studies which will be assessed by practitioners. A research article has to be submitted during the final semester and has to be published in an accredited journal.

The programme is supported by Absa. To provide quality learning, only 50 students will be allowed into the programme.
