Conference on forensic accounting

Posted on March 18, 2013

Prof Karin Barac, Head of the Department of Auditing, welcomed the delegates while Mr Danie du Plessis, a staff member of the Unit for Forensic Accounting, initiated the conference and delivered the opening address.

The aim of the conference was to focus on the role of the forensic accountant, not only in fraud-related matters, but also in civil disputes and acting as expert witness in court or alternative resolution proceedings. The speakers represented some of the big forensic firms while others were from the National Prosecuting Authority and the Asset Forfeiture Unit.

The conference served as an opportunity to highlight the postgraduate programmes presented by the Unit for Forensic Accounting, namely the Postgraduate Diploma in Investigative Accounting and the MPhil and PhD in Fraud Risk Management.

The conference was attended by 150 delegates. Based on the positive feedback, the possibility of hosting it again in 2014 with an extended agenda is investigated.
