Development Studies

Development Studies is a relatively new discipline in the Department, having been offered for the first time in 1998. Development Studies is postgraduate discipline, offering taught modules at the honours level, and research programmes at Master’s and PhD levels. Modules in this discipline lay emphasis on the study of development and aim to prepare students for employment in the broad field of research and development studies.

Development Studies is a growth field in the Faculty of Humanities. The Faculty recognizes that this is a critical area for study, teaching and research for South African students as well as students from the rest of the African continent.

Development Studies offers a wide range of opportunities for postgraduate research for students interested in careers in the field of development – civil service, policy-making, NGOs, charities and development agencies – although the scope is limited by capacity constraints.
