Prof Erasmus is an Associate Professor in the department of Animal and Wildlife Sciences at the University of Pretoria. Previously he was employed as a Specialist Researcher by the Agricultural Research Council. He obtained his under- and postgraduate degrees at UP and his PhD dissertation is entitled “Ruminal degradation of protein of various feedstuffs and its effect on post-ruminal amino acid flow in high producing dairy cows”.

His research focus is on ruminants (dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep) with emphasis on nutrition and management in an environmentally friendly manner. His major research interests are:

  • Protein and amino acid nutrition
  • Rumen modifiers to improve the efficiency of nutrient utilization
  • Strategies to improve the environmental impact of dairy cows
  • Optimizing the use of byproducts in ruminant diets
  • Improving and testing of animal metabolic models as tools for understanding animal biology and to predict animal responses to nutritional challenges

Prof Erasmus is a NRF rated researcher and his research has been published in 60 peer reviewed scientific journals. He has supervised 39 Masters and 5 PhD students and established exchange programs between UP and the Universities of Sassari and UC Davis. He is a prior recipient of the silver medal of the South African Society of Animal Science and the Barney van Niekerk award for significant research contributions to the SA Feed Industry.
