Posted on January 22, 2025

Phina Mdaka, who is a PhD candidate in the Department of Animal Science, recently completed her internship at the Taaibosch Piggery for 2024! Phina also had the honour of being awarded the top student, and she had the following to say about her experience:

"Embarking on my internship journey at Taaibosch Piggery in 2024 was nothing short of transformative.

Taaibosch Piggery is not just a pig farm; it is a beacon of innovation within the agricultural sector, aiming to achieve several key objectives. A cornerstone of its operations is the advancement in technology, where the
integration of cutting-edge systems enhances productivity and traceability through data management and modern breeding techniques.

The farm also emphasizes sustainable practices, focusing on methods that ensure long-term viability while minimizing environmental impact, such as optimizing feed formulations and improving housing conditions for pigs. Additionally, Taaibosch fosters a culture of knowledge sharing, uplifting both its operations and the broader pig farming community by disseminating best practices and promoting continuous education. What I enjoyed most about my internship was the collaborative atmosphere.

Working alongside experienced managers and skilled workers provided me with invaluable insights into daily operations. Each day brought new challenges and learning opportunities, whether it was assisting with farrowing procedures or participating in semen production processes.

Receiving recognition as the top student in the 2024 internship program was a proud moment for me. It validated my hard work and dedication throughout this enriching experience. The mentorship I received from the team at Taaibosch not only enhanced my technical skills but also deepened my passion for agricultural management."

We are very proud of Phina, and thankful to industry players like Taaibosch Piggery who continue to transform the livestock industry and positively contribute to our students' experiences.
