The Albert Luthuli Leadership Institute cordially invites you to join us for a public lecture on the
Politics of Poverty in a Changing World Order: Challenges, Strategies, and Promising Practices
delivered by Prof. Dan Banik, Extraordinary Professor at University of Pretoria and Professor of
Political Science at the University of Oslo.

This lecture will explore the complex relationship between poverty and politics, focusing on the various political ideologies and policies that affect poverty reduction efforts, and reflecting on the role of national and International actors in a changing global order. While examining major global challenges, the talk will also highlight promising practices and what works on the ground.

Dan Banik is professor of political science and director of the Oslo SDG Initiative at the Centre for
Development and the Environment, University of Oslo. He has previously been a Fulbright fellow, Visiting
Professor and Consulting Scholar at Stanford University’s Center on Democracy, Development and the
Rule of Law. He has previously served as the head of the reference group for Norwegian-Finnish Trust
Fund in the World Bank for Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development and on the Board
of the Norwegian Crown Prince and Crown Princess’s Foundation. Prof Banik hosts the “In Pursuit of
Development” podcast with listeners in over 140 countries.
