The Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension & Rural Development is pleased to announce the extension of the appointment of Professor Tom Reardon as extra-ordinary Professors in the Department. Professor Reardon, a globally revered scholar in Agricultural Economics and a Distinguished Professor of Agricultural Economics at Michigan State University, has been an invaluable collaborator in our ongoing research in agricultural and food value chain transformation in the department. Professor Reardon's extensive contributions to academia and research, both globally highlight his remarkable expertise and dedication and it is an honour to have him in our department.
His prolific research record is evidenced by his impressive citation counts, with over 43,633 citations in Google Scholar as of March 2023, boasting an h-index of 96 and i10-index of 294. Additionally, he is a Fellow of the American Agricultural and Applied Economics Association, a title held by only a select few among the association's extensive membership.
During his previous tenure as Extraordinary Professor, he played a pivotal role in various research initiatives, including the ground-breaking Gates Beef Value Chain study. Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, his leadership and guidance facilitated the development of conceptual papers and the publication of significant research findings, such as the paper titled "Hotspots of vulnerability and disruption in food value chains during COVID-19 in South Africa," published in Agrekon.
