Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development

The Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development is one of the leading agricultural economic programmes in South Africa. Our academic and research programmes are designed to understand the challenges faced in the food and agricultural industry and prepare the next generation to become leaders and problem-solvers.

The department aims to build crucial capacity to support agricultural and agribusiness development in South Africa and beyond. Students in the undergraduate programme are equipped with essential workplace and entrepreneurial skills in farm and market accounting, management, decision-making, scenario planning and research. Students in our Postgraduate programme master critical skills for evidence-based decision-making in policy and business environments.

Our department has a number of unique offerings including options for students to register for a BCom or BSc Agric degree. We have been privileged to host the Collaborative Masters in Agricultural and Applied Economics for the past 15 years, training over 1600 students from Africa and hosting visiting lecturers from across Africa and the world to benefit our own students and those from the eight partner Universities. We see this as a huge contribution to the provision of skilled professionals in Africa who can further the development of societies across the continent.
