The ASCEND BAOBAB Synthesis #BlueAfrica Team Meeting: https://lnkd.in/deqVKh-M.

Posted on May 27, 2025

We are excited to share that Dr. Odirilwe Selomane from the University of Pretoria recently participated in the inaugural ASCEND BAOBAB Synthesis #BlueAfrica team meeting, held from 12–15 May 2025. The goal of the synthesis was to bring together experts from across the African continent, to collate and eventually analyse data on the carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and livelihoods of marine ecosystems surrounding the African continent. The outcomes from the synthesis will support decision making towards the three conventions: UNFCCC for climate change, GBF for biodiversity, and SDGs for human development.

The discussions focused on several key questions, including:

  • How can we improve mechanisms for collating, collecting and synthesising marine ecosystem data in Africa?
  • What critical aspects must be defined to maximize co-benefits and minimize trade-offs in blue carbon initiatives?

As part of the broader ASCEND Blue Africa initiative, this team aims to ensure that carbon storage efforts in Africa’s coastal and marine ecosystems align with the needs of its communities. By addressing data gaps and empowering policymakers, the project seeks to promote policies that balance ecological health and with resilience.

We congratulate Dr. Odirilwe on this significant engagement and look forward to the team's contributions to sustainable ocean-climate solutions in Africa!
