    The Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development (AEERD) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Rashid Sumaila as Extraordinary Professor for the period 2024-2026. Sumaila Professor Rashid Sumaila is a University Killam Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Interdisciplinary Ocean and Fisheries Economics at the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, and the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, University of British Columbia. Dr. Sumaila received his Ph.D. (Economics) from the University of Bergen and his B.Sc. (Quantity Surveying) from the Ahmadu Bello University. Prof. Sumaila specializes in bioeconomics, marine ecosystem valuation and the analysis of global issues such as fisheries subsidies, illegal fishing, climate change and oil spills. Sumaila is one of the most internationally recognized interdisciplinary ocean and fisheries economist, and one of the world’s most innovative researchers on the future of the oceans, integrating the social, economic and fisheries sciences to build novel pathways towards sustainable ocean and fisheries. He published over 400 peer reviewed papers and numerous other publications (including in Nature and Science) on making him the most influential ocean and fisheries economist. Prof. Sumaila has won several prestigious awards, including the 2023 Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement and the 2023 Albert I Grand Medal in the Science category; the 2022 RSC Miroslaw Romanowski Medal for Scientific Work Relating to Environmental Problems; the 2021 SSHRC Impact Award, Partnership Category; and the 2017 Volvo Environment Prize Both the Tyler and the Volvo Prizes are considered by many as the field specific Nobel prize. He was inducted into the Fellowship of the Royal Society of Canada in 2019, and named an AAAS Fellow in 2023. He served on the NASEM Committee on Quantifying US Contribution to Ocean Plastic Pollution. He was named a Hokkaido University Ambassador in 2016; a distinguished professor at the National University of Malaysia; an International Scientific Advisory Board Member, Stockholm Resilience Centre, and Chair of the International Scientific Advisory Board of the World Bank Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience, University of Cape Coast. He co-Editor in Chief of the Nature affiliated npj Ocean Sustainability journal, and serves on several journal editorial boards including those of Science Advances, Environmental & Resource Economics and Marine Policy.
