On 9 September 2023, the University of Pretoria hosted its annual #ChooseUP Day, designed to offer prospective students a compelling glimpse into why UP is their top choice. Dr Selma Karuaihe, Acting Head of Department, together with some of the postgraduate students from the Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development showcased some of the work that takes place in the department and invited prospective students to consider a future career in agricultural economics, environmental economics, extension services, and rural development.

The Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development is one of the leading agricultural economics programmes in South Africa and in Africa. The department boasts a rich history of nurturing outstanding graduates who have gone on to hold influential positions within international development agencies, continental organizations, national governments, and non-governmental organizations. Their remarkable contributions have played a vital role in enhancing the capacity for food security and nutrition in Africa, leaving its mark on the region.

As stated by Hanco Marais, a student in the Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development, “Agricultural Economics teaches you so many skills that are necessary for life ranging from time management to critical thinking to analysis of markets and the greater agribusiness environment. It teaches you certain concepts that you can then take back to your respective communities and improve the farming/business management methods used by most. But our degree does not only stop there, it is also incredibly versatile. Workplace possibilities vary, if you would like to work in an office from 9 to 5 you can, or you can be traveling from farm to farm providing advice on farming techniques.”
