We say goodbye to Prof Charles Machethe!

Posted on July 01, 2022

Prof Machethe started at UP in January 2001 as Director of the Postgraduate School. Prior to this he was a visiting Prof in our Department and wanted to join the excellent team following this experience.

He has been an academic all his life, starting out as a Lecturer at the University of Fort Hare and then spent 20 years at the former University of the North.

Prof Charles Machethe retired from the University yesterday, 30 June 2022. The Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development express our deep appreciation for our wise 'Elder' (as he is fondly referred to). As staff shared their appreciation of his contributions yesterday, our appreciation of his role as Chair of our Dept PG Committee, mentor and colleague was warmly echoed by all staff. Prof Machethe is well respected for his warmth, collegiality and attention to detail.

Prof Machethe will remain part of our team, as he transitions to the role of Extraordinary Professor and later Emeritus Professor in our Department and will continue supervising postgraduates and participating in research activities.

The end of June came around very fast! For those who missed the opportunity to join us yesterday in expressing our appreciation for Prof Machethe and his significant contributions to the lives of staff and students and to the University and Department over his 21 years of dedicated service at UP, you are welcome to use the following link to submit words of appreciation and well-wishes: https://forms.gle/v2njsonhxPS66RWf9.
