Standard Bank invests in the future of two Agricultural Economics students

Posted on March 05, 2019

In February 2019 Shampie Doko and Lunga Kumalo, two undergraduate students in the Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development received the news that they were each awarded a Standard Bank CSI bursary administered by the StudyTrust. These bursaries are awarded to students who have shown leadership and academic potential and provide full coverage of tuition fees, prescribed textbooks, study materials, transport, accommodation, meals, laptop computers and a monthly stipend for living expenses. Bursaries like these go a long way to ensure that our students stay on track with their academic goals. Having to take up part-time employment to fund their studies and living expenses often disrupt their academic tracks and ultimately delay their uptake in the job market.

Both Sharpie and Lunga are passionate about the future that agriculture holds for the youth of South Africa and are eager to start making a lasting contribution to the success of the South African agricultural industry. As a Department, we are proud to have these two future leaders as part of our student corps and are excited to see what their future holds. We are also extremely grateful for the support that Standard Bank is providing to our talented students, and we look forward to more fruitful collaborations on various future initiatives.

“Receiving the Standard Bank CSI Bursary has eased my financial burden which I have been under for the past two years. Not having to worry about my finances will help me focus more on my studies to ensure I perform my best. I have no words to express my heartfelt gratitude. This opportunity will not only make my dreams come true, but it has also influenced me to make a lasting impact on where ever I may find myself.” – Shampie Doko

“I cannot even begin to explain the stress this opportunity, provided by Standard Bank, has alleviated for myself and my parents. I really believe in the Ubuntu sentiment: “it takes a village to raise a child” I am where I am today because of the efforts of others. You have catapulted me into the future and have given me the chance to attain my dreams. I am eternally grateful and fully intend to make the most of this blessing.” – Lunga Khumalo
