Agricultural Economics Seminar Series

Posted on March 04, 2013

The Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development will have a seminar on Wednesday, 6 March 2013. The seminar will be presented by Devaki Jain, a well-known Indian gender specialist and activist. The seminar will be based on the completed paper about the economic success stories of India and China. The paper explores the impact of their growth paths, post-reforms, on women with special reference to employment. The paper also discusses the strong differences in the outcomes, which can be expected not only due to the particular priorities in choosing the engines of growth, between the two countries but also due to the difference between political ideology underpinnings between the two countries. In between there are some lessons for South Africa and other developing countries.
