South African Farm Labour Statistics

Unemployment is one of the major socio-economic problems that has been facing South Africa over a decade. The latest quarterly figures produced by Statistics South Africa showed that about one in four people who are willing to work can’t find a job. At the same time agricultural sector is expected to create one million jobs by the year 2030, according to the National Development Plan (NDP). Some of the farm labour trends such as occupation, wages and geographic distribution are discussed in detail in this article by Kirsten and Liebenberg.
