Free eyesight screenings for the JuniorTukkies

Posted on October 05, 2010

Ster-Kinekor, in partnership with Spec-Savers, recently screened the eyesight of 161 JuniorTukkies on the Hatfield Campus as part of the annual JuniorTukkie Preparation Conference. The JuniorTukkies were all treated to a movie at Brooklyn Mall and 69 learners received a free pair of glasses.

Ster-Kinekor is involved in a wide range of Corporate Social Investment projects, the biggest of which is Vision Mission. The area of sight and vision is a logical choice since it is difficult to enjoy any of Ster-Kinekor’s products if you can’t see properly! They assist youngsters in underprivileged communities by identifying and helping those with visual problems nationwide.

Spec-Savers, already a UP partner in the Vision 2020 Eye Care Clinic where all proceeds of their practice in the clinic is donated to the Cataract Fund, donated the use of two mobile practices and two optometrists for three days.

The JuniorTukkies were delighted to be fitted with glasses at no cost and were able to select from a range of fashionable frames to complement their individual tastes and features. Deeva Webb, a JuniorTukkie, had this to say about the initiative: So many people have problems with their eyes and don't have the means or ability to get their eyes tested and to get glasses. They even give up hope and don't pursue their academic dreams because they get frustrated when they can't read from the blackboard or even read a book properly. So I would just like to say a very sincere thank you to Ster-Kinekor and Spec-Savers for making our dreams come true and brightening our futures.”
