The Embassy of Japan donates an ophthalmological unit

Posted on May 19, 2011

More than 1 000 surgeries per year

Ophthalmic surgeons perform more than 1 000 cataract surgeries and consult more than 2 400 patients annually. The clinic and its patients rely on the goodwill of donors for specialised and disposable equipment, such as the lenses and suction cassettes required for surgery.

Instead of contributing towards the clinic’s operational expenses, the Embassy of Japan supported the clinic with an ophthalmological unit. With this new unit, the clinic can improve consultations to diagnose diseases causing preventable blindness such as cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

Donors can be ensured that their funds are used as intended, eg the purchase of assets, such as the ophthalmological unit. It also reduces the reporting requirements, which can stretch over a period of several months.

Donate equipment and receive a tax certificate

The clinic continually needs to upgrade surgical and diagnostic equipment.Donors can either donate funds to the value of the required equipment or by purchasing the equipment itself. For both options donors are eligible for tax certificates in accordance with the Income Tax Act, although the processes may vary.

For more information on the processes, click on the in-kind donation policy on the UP website.
