#TuksHockey: Tuks brings Maties winning streak to an end

Posted on May 15, 2017

Maties was the only unbeaten team in the tournament up until they played against Tuks. With two more rounds to go Tuks, Maties, Pukke and Wits all got 12 points after five games. Tuks is the log leaders because they scored 36 points up to now which the most by any team in the competition.
Inky Zondi (Tuks coach) was satisfied with the way his team played.

“I asked the players for a 100% effort over 60 minutes and that is exactly what they did. Catherine Morris scored our winning goal in the dying minutes of the game. The one thing that needs to slightly improve is our defensive play.

“It is important to keep on winning because we want to control our own fate and not depend on other teams for results.”

Tuks owned the first half as Chané Hill dragged flicked the ball from a short corner to hit the back of the net in the seventh minute to put Tuks 1-0 in the lead. With another four short corner opportunities, Tuks lacked the experience to round it off.

But it was in the 30th minute that Minke van Heerden of Maties struck back with a last-minute goal before halftime to equal the score at 1-1.

In the third chukka of the match it was still Tuks with the momentum as they kept the Maties in defensive mode and as the final chukka approached the match was delayed due to rain.

Tuks play UJ the defending champions this afternoon. On paper, it should be an easy game as the Johannesburg team has lost four of their five games. As far as Zondi is concerned the playing field is level.

“What ever happened in previous games count for absolutely nothing.”
