#TuksHockey: The Tuks women’s team start the season on a winning note

Posted on February 14, 2017

The TuksHockey women’s team had good start to their season beating Wits at home and away in their first intervarsity encounter this year.

On Saturday, 11 February 2017 at the Tuks Astroturf the home team won 3-2 and on Sunday in Johannesburg they won 2-1 against Wits.

Head Coach, Inky Zondi was reasonably satisfied with both wins, “It is definitely nice to start the season on a  winning note but more importantly it is good that we have started playing games. It is one thing to train and something totally different to play. The players tend to learn more when they play in an actual match,” said Zondi.
According to Zondi during Saturday’s game his players fell “asleep” during the middle period of the match and it cost them. “It was a bit of a concern that Wits had only two real opportunities to score and they made the most of it. We will have to work on our defensive structures during training. But it was good play back to back games as this serves as preparation for the Varsity Hockey tournament. Zondi was impressed by Anel  Luus who scored three goals in both matches.
The TuksHockey women’s second team won 4-0 on Saturday against Wits and on Sunday the score-line was4-2.
TuksHockey’s men’s team drew in their first game against Wits, the score was 2-all. On Sunday at the Wits Astroturf Tuks lost 1-2.
Guy Elliot, Head Coach of the TuksHockey men’s team said that considering that the team is in a rebuilding phase he is satisfied with the way his players performed.
“In the first game when we were 2-0 up I purposely brought on some of the less experienced players with the intention of giving them game time.” Tim Guisse-Brown and Michael Forrest are two of the Tuks players who made an impact on the game.
Elliot was also impressed by how Tevin Kok set up one of his team’s goals, Tevin recently played for South Africa in the Summer Series.
The Tukshockey men’s second team drew 3-all on Saturday and on Sunday they won 3-0.
It is going to be a busy hockey weekend at the Tuks Astroturf. On Friday evening at 18:00 the woman’s team will play against Pukke followed by the men’s game at 19:30.
Saturday evening the women face Kovsies at 18:00 followed by the men’s game at 19:30.
