Goal 4: Quality Education

Our Commitment

SDG4 is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. UP actively contributes to tackling the SDG4 as part of its core activities. As a public higher education institution, it has the mission to serve society, through the progress and dissemination of knowledge and understanding between cultures, societies, and people, namely by way of teaching and research of excellence.

UP provides free access to a range of educational resources. In the two examples provided, access to resources focuses on pre-university students, helping them to bridge the gap between a weak basic educational system, and the rigour of university education. The Pre-University Academy focuses on talented individuals from resource-poor settings, and includes weekend classes on campus, along with support to parents / guardians. The JuniorTukkie is open to all, and is an online platform for subject support and student advisory services. UP regularly hosts open access public events on contemporary and relevant issues, and those related to sustainable development. They are delivered through our transdisciplinary platforms such as Future Africa, or through faculties. Events may be face-to-face, virtual or hybrid.  UP offers wide range of vocational training events and programmes to the general public. Examples of short courses available from our Business School and Department of Enterprises can be delivered through online, in-person and blended modes. They focus on assisting large and small organisations as well as individuals, building skills in leadership, general and functional management. A wide range of examples are highlighted in our quarterly community engagement newsletter, Lentsu La Sechaba. Amongst the suite of Pre-University Academy activities, outreach within schools in disadvantaged communities, efforts focus on supporting high school learners, as well as strengthening the capability of teachers. The institutional Admission Policy approved in 2020 ensures access to all who meet faculty admission requirements, regardless of ethnicity, religion, disability or gender. This policy is embedded in the University’s commitment to eradicate unfair discrimination on all grounds, and is supported by dedicated policies around certain vulnerable groups such as students with disabilities.

Teaching

The culture of excellent teaching is firmly entrenched at UP across all fields of study.   Our committed academics have multiple approaches to teaching to ensure that students with a variety of learning strengths succeed. Our teaching and learning approach is based on inquiry-based learning, hybrid learning, and community-based learning. This means that students can ask questions and do research in their field to learn and discover answers on their own; be taught in a classroom or other formal contact environment but also find additional activities, notes, resources, and videos to supplement their classes online or practically apply their knowledge to help communities around university campuses.

Also, in partnership with the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME), we have extended this mentoring opportunity to 3 high schools in Mamelodi.
