Quiz Night: Bringing People Together

Posted on August 15, 2024

University of Pretoria Campus Tours (UPCT) and the UP Library collaborated to host a once-in-a-lifetime quiz night for UP students and staff. After weeks of planning and back-and-forth communication, it was finally the night of nights on Tuesday, August 6th.

UPCT used this as an ideal opportunity to collect donations for Women’s Month. We asked all our registered quiz-goers to bring a hygienic product of their choice to donate as their “entrance fee” to the quiz night. This is the start of our month-long drive to collect products to create little hampers of hygienic products for women in need.

Approximately 60 people registered to join the quiz night including the prestigious Department of Historical and Heritage Studies (DHHS) MD Club an organisation for the Masters and Doctoral students in the department. There was a backdrop and props for photos and memory-making,  coffee and hot chocolate at the ready for our guests along with fun and easy snacks like popcorn and cookies. Music was played to create an ambience as the evening went on.

The fun started with a quick 25-question Kahoot of library-based questions and riddles hosted by the library staff, Gerda Ehlers and Ntando Mazibuko. It was important to us to highlight and market the library and its services, as they were a key partner in making this event happen.

After this starter, it was time for the main course. The quiz of five themed rounds of general questions related to the World, South Africa, General Knowledge, TV and Film and the University of Pretoria. Our last UP-based round emphasised the point that even though you are a staff member or a student, you might not know the campus very well. Guests were invited to book a UP campus tour and learn more!

The aim was for the teams to deliberate and debate before writing their final answers down. The hustle and bustle of deliberation is where all the fun was. After the marks were tallied there was a prize-giving for the top three teams and a bonus prize for the team we deemed had the best name. Congrats to the winning team - "Dr Bob and the Peppers", winners of the best group name, "Honours survivors", and top three spots. This concluded our event!

The event could not have happened without the amazing people involved. This includes Gerda Ehlers and her team, who dealt with the planning on the library side of the quiz night. From the DHHS, UPCT campus tours would also like to acknowledge Zimkhitha Tsotso, Nusrat (Naz) Goolam Mahomed and Prof Karen Harris for their continuous support of our dreams and allowing us to plan and co-host this successful event.
