In other words the panel of experts evaluated every item in terms of its adequacy and potential productivity, for inclusion in the pre-final drafts of the test. The TALA is part of the Home Languages project that ICELDA is currently undertaking for Umalusi (South Africa’s Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education). The project investigates problematic aspects of the exit examinations in Home Languages in Grade 12, and will make recommendations for the improvement both of the assessment design of the current three papers. In particular, ICELDA hopes to come forward with a sound, theoretically defensible set of alternatives to ensure greater fairness.
