ALL 124 Academic literacy levels for Economic and Management Sciences (Semester 2)

Module content (Credits: 6):

This module intends to equip students with the competence in reading and writing required in the four high impact modules: Business Management, Financial Accounting, Statistics and Economics. Students will also be equipped to interpret and draw figures and graphs and to do computations and manage relevant formulas.

 

ALL 125 Academic literacy levels for Humanities (Semester 2)

Language of instruction: English

Module content (Credits: 6):

This module equips students to understand and use a range of discipline-specific terminology; apply the strategies of critical and comprehensive reading to their own academic literacy; apply the conventions of academic writing to their own writing, using the process approach, to produce intelligible academic texts and use the correct referencing technique as required by the faculty.

 

ALL 126 Communication for Accounting Sciences (Semester 2)

Language of instruction: English

Module content (Credits: 6):

This module equips students to think, construct, and share knowledge critically through mediums/audience and using relevant/credible evidence. Critically read and make meaning from a wide range of academic and professional texts from the accounting sciences, as well as texts from the accounting professional environment. Students will communicate effectively using oral and written communication modes by applying the skills learned in units on communication and from RRP 100 and AIM.

 

LST 110 Language and study skills (Semester 1)

Module content (Credits: 6):

The module will aim to equip students with the ability to cope with the reading and writing demands of mainstream modules.

 

LST 133 Language and study skills (Mamelodi Campus) (Semester 1)

Language of instruction: English    

Module content (Credits: 8):

The module quip students with essential academic and research skills. In LST 133, students learn referencing (and how to avoid plagiarism),  paraphrasing, note-taking, and paragraph writing

 

LST 143 Language and study skills (Mamelodi Campus) (Semester 2)

Language of instruction: English    

Module content (Credits: 8):

LST 143 builds on these skills by focusing on different paragraph types, integrating supporting details into original writing, and synthesising information from multiple sources. Together, these modules prepare students for successful academic futures.

 

ELH 111 Academic English for Health Sciences (MBChB and BChD) (Semester 1)*

Module content (Credits: 6):

Proficiency in Academic English by interpreting and contextualising philosophical and sociological texts prescribed during the first semester; a bio-ethical orientation for studying Health Care; study skill improvement.*Presented to students in Health Sciences only.

 

Academic English for Health Sciences (MBChB and BChD) (Semester 2)*

Language of instruction: English                              

Module content (Credits: 6):

Proficiency in Academic English used in the basic medical sciences; analysis, synthesis and presentation of the texts prescribed in the second semester.*Presented to students in Health Sciences only.

 

ELH 121 Academic English for Health Sciences (BCur, BDietetics, BOH, BOT, BRad, BPhysT) (Semester 1)*

Language of Instruction: English                              

Module content (Credits: 6):

The purpose of this module is to assist students with academic reading skills, as well as academic writing and presentation skills, with the focus on academic language in the Health Care Sciences based on subject-specific material. *Presented to students in Health Sciences only.

 

ELH 122 Academic English for Health Sciences (BCur, BDietetics, BOH, BOT, BRad, BPhysT) (Semester 2)*

Language of Instruction: English                                

Module content (Credits: 6):

The purpose of this module is to assist students with the specific skills required in the Health Care Sciences, including interviewing and report-writing skills. This module practically applies specific knowledge and techniques based on the principles of academic reading, academic writing and presentation skills, as well as critical thinking.*Presented to students in Health Sciences only.

 

ELH 131 Academic English for Health Sciences (BCMP) (Semester 1)*

Language of Instruction: English                           

Module content (Credits: 6):

The module aims at developing academic English proficiency of Clinical Associate students to an acceptable level, using broad texts that are not necessarily degree related, study skill methods language exercises. This is achieved through using techniques which promoting student language skills, as well as teaching professional skills suited to their study programme and future career. *Presented to students in Health Sciences only.

 

ELH 132 Academic English for Health Sciences (BCMP) (Semester 2)*

Module content (Credits: 6):

TTS 751 Academic writing skills (Semester 1)

Language of instruction: English

Module content (Credits: 10):

Academic writing, research skills and basic research methodology for language students, including planning of a time management schedule, analysing and interpreting a research topic, using primary and secondary sources, organising information and results into a well-structured document. Technical and ethical aspects of research are also addressed.

 

ALL 710 Academic literacy level for Humanities (Semester 2)

Language of instruction: English

Module content (Credits: 20):

This module focuses on major theories of reading, the relationship between reading and socio-affective factors, as well as appropriate strategies for improving reading proficiency. The second component examines a variety of ways to teach writing, and to embed it as a graduate attribute into language and disciplinary curricula.

 

ALL 720 Language testing and assessment (Semester 1)

Language of instruction: English

Module content (Credits: 20):

The main aim of this module is to introduce students to the key principles, concepts and current beliefs about language testing and assessment, to understand the relationship between language teaching and language testing and assessment, to learn how to evaluate a test in terms of its design, use, purpose and appropriateness, as well as to interpret data derived from language tests.
