Abridged  CV:

Adelia Carstens is a full professor and Director of the Unit for Academic at the University of Pretoria.

She obtained the degrees BA, BA Honours (cum laude). Masters (cum laude), and DPhil  from the University of Pretoria and DLitt et Phil from Unisa. Prof. Carstens has published more than 40 articles in accredited journals as well as eight contributions in other peer-reviewed publications, and presented 46 papers at local and international conferences/seminars. She successfully supervised and co-supervised 6 masters students and 4 doctoral students on various topics in linguistics and applied linguistics, and currently supervises 4 doctoral students.

Her wide-ranging experience in syllabus design and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level include the following subject areas: lexicology, semantics, morphology, discourse analysis, lexicography and terminology, document design, business communication, technical report-writing and essay-writing.

Research projects initiated and/or co-ordinated by her include Ideology in Afrikaans monolingual dictionaries, Teaching dictionary-using skills in secondary schools, Planning and developing a quadrilingual dictionary of Chemistry, Evaluating and designing public information materials about HIV/AIDS for low literate South Africans; and Using self-narratives to scaffold multimodal literacy and learning in the Bachelor of Education.

She referees NRF applications as well as papers for the accredited journals SA Linguistics and Applied Language Studies; Language Matters; Literator; S.A. Journal for Language Teaching, SA Journal of Education and Per Linguam. During her career she served on the executives of a number of professional societies, including the LSSA, Afrilex and CoHSSSA.  Prof. Carstens is currently Deputy Chair of the South African Applied Linguistics Association (SAALA).

 

Responsibilities:

She is also actively involved in designing curricula for undergraduate and postgraduate academic literacy interventions, and in teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

 

Research highlights:

Prof. Carstens initiated and/or co-ordinated the following research projects, listed in reverse chronological order:

·         Using narratives to scaffold multimodal literacy and learning in the Bachelor of Education.

·         Evaluating the quality of leaflets and brochures on HIV/AIDS prevention and care (NRF grant)

·         Designing effective documents for low-literate readers (SANPAD grant)

·         The planning and development of a quadrilingual Dictionary of Chemistry

·         Ideological bias in Afrikaans monolingual dictionaries
