Abridged CV: Adelia Carstens is a Professor Emerita and former Director of the Unit for Academic at the University of Pretoria. She obtained the degrees BA, BA Honours (cum laude). Masters (cum laude), and DPhil from the University of Pretoria and DLitt et Phil from Unisa. Prof. Carstens has published more than 50 contributions in peer reviewed publications, and presented numerous papers at local and international conferences/seminars. She successfully supervised and co-supervised 7 masters students and 7 doctoral students on various topics in linguistics and applied linguistics. Her wide-ranging experience in syllabus and materials design and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level include the following subject areas: lexicology, semantics, morphology, discourse analysis, lexicography and terminology, document design, business communication, technical report-writing and essay-writing. Research projects initiated and/or co-ordinated by her include Ideology in Afrikaans monolingual dictionaries, Teaching dictionary-using skills in secondary schools, Planning and developing a quadrilingual dictionary of Chemistry, Evaluating and designing public information materials about HIV/AIDS for low literate South Africans; and Using self-narratives to scaffold multimodal literacy and learning in the Bachelor of Education, and Utilising first-year university students’ multilingual and multimodal resources to promote concept literacy in first-year university students; Multimodal analysis of student-consultant interactions in writing centres.

Responsibilities: As the Director of the Unit for Academic Literacy Prof. Carstens was responsible for strategic planning as well as management of permanent and temporary staff, finances, teaching and learning, research and administrative processes. She was also actively involved in designing curricula for undergraduate and postgraduate academic literacy interventions, and in teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. |
