The Director of UBRIL is Professor André Boraine.
André Boraine is a Professor in Law and former Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Pretoria (UP). Currently he serves as a professor in the Department of Mercantile Law, and he is the Director of the newly established Unit for Business Rescue and Insolvency Law (UBRIL at UP).
He is on the roll of practicing attorneys and an honorary member of the South African Rescue and Insolvency Practitioners Association (SARIPA). Boraine served as a member of the Insol Global Fellowship Programme Committee, and he is also a member of the Insol Academics Forum. Boraine was the INSOL Scholar for the 2008 to 2009 cycle. He is also a member of the IEEI and the International Insolvency Institute.
Over the years, Boraine has taught a variety of law subjects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and he is involved with the practical legal training of candidate attorneys, as well as insolvency practitioners.
His current research interests include Insolvency law, the Law of civil procedure, Aspects of property law and Consumer law. He has presented at various local and international conferences and seminars and has published widely. He is also a co-author of a leading South African insolvency textbook, i.e. Meskin Insolvency Law. He has a keen interest in comparative and international insolvency systems, with a particular focus on Africa systems.
In 2011, the World Bank appointed Boraine as a specialist consultant in conducting a ROSC analysis of the South African insolvency system. He served as a member of the World Bank team in 2013 when it conducted a similar analysis of the Namibian insolvency system. He also served as peer reviewer for the Zimbabwean World Bank ROSC report and reviewed the Draft Lesotho Insolvency Bill for the World Bank.
In 2013, Boraine served as a panellist at an UNCITRAL conference on insolvency systems for SME’s. A joint paper on the topic followed and was subsequently published in the Insol International Review.
Boraine received the UP exceptional achiever award twice. He is currently a B rated NRF researcher and in 2020 he was acknowledged as one of the Law Dragon global top 500 insolvency specialists.
