#TuksRugby: Tuks completes a hat trick of FNB Varsity Cup home victories beating Wits

Posted on March 29, 2022

On Monday, 28 March, Tuks registered their third consecutive home victory, beating Wits 39-24 in this 2022 FNB Varsity Cup season, but still, it is not guaranteed the team will contest the semi-finals.

Tuks head coach, Nico Luus, joked, saying that he does not think many movie writers would have been able to script a more suspenseful finish for the Varsity Cup. In the next two weeks, there are all to play for.

"As things stand, Tuks could top the log after 11 April, or we could be fifth. So, for us, there are no easy games."

Tuks is playing the log leaders, Shimlas, on Monday. Their last pool game is against UJ.

After seven games Shimlas are on 27 points. Ikeys got 26, Tuks 25, Maties 24 and Wits 20.

Apart from Tuks playing Shimlas, the crunch games will be Wits and Ikeys and Northwest versus Wits.

Should Shimlas beat Tuks, they will remain the log leaders with possibly 36 points. If Ikeys can get the better of Wits, they can also finish on 36. If Tuks wins their last two games, they will have 34 or 35 points. Maties ought to win their last two games, which means they would end with 34 points.

Wits can be the proverbial "Joker in the pack" should they beat Ikeys and Northwest.

Luus is satisfied with how his team went about things to beat Wits.

"Our performance against Wits was not perfect. There were moments when the team played brilliantly, but we still tended to make too many mistakes. With every game now a must-win game, it is something we can't afford to do."

The Tuks coach praised his backline players.

"With the two packs of forwards relatively evenly matched, the 'backs' needed to step up, and they did. Our back trio, Clyde Lewis, Kabelo Mokoena and Tharquin Manuel, were brilliant. I was impressed with the way Lewis countered from the fullback position. He was justifiably the player of the match.

"Credit should also go to the two centres, Zander Reynders and Lincoln Daniels. They keep on improving as a combination."

Tuks's Young Guns are still unbeaten. Last night they won 34-17 against Wits. On Monday, they are playing Northwest in Potchefstroom. Northwest's Young Guns are also still unbeaten.
