#TuksSport: Tuks is a force to be reckoned with in all Varsity Tournaments

Posted on October 14, 2019

"Veni, Vidi, Vici" is an excellent way to describe the heroics of the various Tuks sports teams and athletes who competed in the Varsity Tournaments.

Tuks indeed "came, saw and conquered" on the cricket oval, netball court and rugby field. Teams of the university contested five Varsity finals and won three. In five other tournaments, they lost out in the semifinals. In only one of the 11 Varsity competitions did Tuks end up not being one of the top four teams.

The definite highlight was Tuks'netball team becoming the first team not to lose one game during a Varsity Tournament. In the final, they beat Maties 48-43.

Jenny van Dyk (Tuks head coach) ascribes her player's constant dominance to success begetting success.

"Our goal is to at least qualify for the semifinal each time we take to the court, but in reality, we want to be in the final.

"The more players get to play finals, the more they learn how to handle the pressure. I believe success is no accident. It is all about hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."

The Assupol Tuks cricket team has beaten UJ in their Varsity-final by eight wickets. It was the fourth time in five years that Assupol Tuks won the Varsity Tournament. What made it this time around more special is that the feat has been accomplished while the club is celebrating 100 years of cricketing excellence.

Assupol Tuks's captain, Neil Brand, was for the second consecutive year the player of the tournament. In nine games he scored 269 runs at an average of 38.4 as well as taking nine wickets (13.8 average).

Kruger van Wyk (Assupol Tuks head coach) emphasised that to be the best means, there can never be any complacency.

"The real challenge for any young player should be to become genuinely a cricketing great. That entails dominating at the highest level for some time."

The Delta Drone Tuks women's sevens rugby team won the Varsity as well as USSA Tournaments. In the last three years, they have only been beaten locally by the Springboks and a visiting team from France. A definite highlight was beating France's national side during a tournament in Spain.

Tuks's rugby team got beaten by Maties in the Varsity Cup-final while Tuks basketball team lost to UJ in their Varsity-final.

The Tuks football team lost out in the Varsity semifinals against TUT in a penalty shootout; Maties had beaten Tuks in the Varsity women's hockey-semi-final; the men's sevens rugby team lost against Maties in the Varsity semifinal; Tuks Young Guns lost to Maties in the semifinal in the Varsity Cup. Tuks's athletics team finished second to Pukke.
