#TuksFootball: UP-Tuks slumps to a 4-0 defeat against UJ in the Varsity Football Tournament

Posted on August 09, 2019

UP-Tuks's football team set all sorts of unwanted records last night when they lost 4-0 at home against UJ in the Varsity Tournament.

It is the team's most significant loss ever against UJ and only the second time in the history of Varsity Football that UP-Tuks lost by 4 goals.

One mistake during the first few minutes of the second half totally changed the outcome of the game. UP-Tuks's captain, Simbongile Njokwe, headed the ball backwards for it to loop over goalkeeper Giovanni Idi's hands and into the net.

Up to that moment, UP-Tuks seemed to be in control and that it would only be a matter of time before they would start scoring goals. The own goal, however, changed everything. From then on, it seemed as if the UP-Tuks gameplan imploded. UJ capitalised scoring three more goals within minutes. The "blitzkrieg" took the last bit of fight out of the home team.

The loss means UP-Tuks is again with their back against the wall for the rest of the Varsity Tournament. They need to win their remaining four games to have a realistic chance of qualifying for the playoffs.

Tlisane Motaung (UP-Tuks head coach) had no excuses for what happened between the four lines.

"We had our chances. Football is all about scoring goals. If you don't, you will end up paying the price.  That is the reality. Personally, I don't think the result is a true reflection of the game. We dominated during the first half.

"Tonight is about a lesson learned. I don't want anyone to start pointing fingers and blaming each other. We should accept that we lost heavily and there are certain things we need to work on.

"It is important that our fans realise that all is not lost. We have been in this situation before, and each time we managed to bounce back. We will do so again."

Njokwe described UP-Tuks performance as an awful day at the office.

"Collectively, as a team, there was no cohesion between the forwards and the backs. It was due to a lack of communication. We also remain our own worst enemies by not making the scoring opportunities we set up to count."

UP-Tuks will be playing Northwest in away game next Thursday.
