#TuksWaterpolo-team starts the season on a winning note

Posted on February 04, 2019

The TuksWaterpolo-team notched up their first win in the Premier League on Saturday by beating Old Eds 16-12.

However, things are not going to get any easier as tonight they will be playing the Crusaders at St Stithians.  Norm Calmeyer (Tuks team manager) expects a titanic battle in the pool.

“Fitness is always important in any water polo game, but tonight it is going to be crucial as I expect it to be a game of no mercy. We certainly need, as on Saturday, for two or more players to really lift their game to the next level.”

Calmeyer is quite impressed with his team’s performance against Old Eds.

“We dominated from the first quarter, quickly building a four-goal lead and managed to stay ahead until the third quarter. We then decided to experiment a bit. Things did not work out as expected as at the start of the fourth quarter the scores were tied at 10-all. Our players showed a lot a character to find that something special to ensure a victory.”

Blayne Spitholt (Tuks captain) played a blinder as the centre forward. He was like a real “general” who set up one attack after the other and ever so often he would slip a goal through himself.  His tactical brilliance forced his opponents to mark him seriously. At one stage it was a case of three against one. Not that it fazed Spitholt as it opened up the game which allowed him to put his teammates on the outside in scoring positions.

What made all of this special is that Spitholt usually plays as a centre back.

Luke Parlabean (Tuks goalkeeper) also had a good game making vital saves. Equally impressive was his passing. It very seldom happened that any of his passes got intercepted.

It was decided over the weekend to appoint Roy Ambler as Tuks head coach. He will be assisted by Jason Tunnel.  According to Calmeyer Ambler will be more involved with the women’s team with Tunnel coaching the men.

The Tuks women’s water polo team is playing tomorrow night against Wahoo.

“It is going to be an interesting game as we are fielding a new team giving quite a few first-year students game time,” explained Calmeyer.
