Varsity Football: Do or Die for UP-Tuks

Posted on August 24, 2015

UP-Tuks head into round 6 of the 2015 Varsity football competition knowing that anything less than a win against NWU PUKKE will dash their hopes of defending the trophy for a record third time.

The team has had a rollercoaster of results in this season and unconvincing performances in the opening matches, this is largely due to low morale that was caused by the team failing to get promotion into the ABC Motsepe league and SAB regional league respectively.

Head coach Evangelos Vellios mentioned that the team has been in this position before and they can still qualify for the semi-finals after they lost twice last season as well. One cannot ignore the major setback for the defending champions caused by a 2-1 loss to Wits. Scenes after that defeat revealed a dejected group of players who definitely need a morale boost.

Pukke on the other hand have been performing above expectations as they find themselves third on the log. Confidence is surely high in their camp after they bagged a few wins to the surprise a lot of pundits.

If history is anything to go by UP-Tuks will step up and get all three points in the match this evening as they are a team with big match temperament and play extremely well under pressure. The last time the two teams met was in December 2014 during the USSA club championships where UP-Tuks narrowly edged Pukke 1-0 to go on and win the tournament.

Tears and celebrations alike are to be anticipated in the next two weeks as teams continue to fight for the top 4.

The match kicks off at 18:00 this evening, Monday 24 August 2015. Tickets can be purchased from the Ticket booth on the UP Sports Campus from 15:00 onwards, tickets cost R 10.00 Alternatively tickets can be downloaded for free from the Varsity Sports app.
