Morris Gilbert on his 150th Match as UP-Tuks 1 Team Manager

Posted on March 31, 2015

Morris Gilbert reported for duty for his 150th match as team manager for the UP-Tuks 1 team when they took on NWU-Pukke in the semi-final of the 2015 Varsity Cup on Monday 30 March 2015.

I am honoured, proud but also humbled by this achievement as I have come a long way since taking over from Jannie Robbertse in 2010. Being involved with UP-Tuks 1 and TuksRugby means you are part of a strong winning culture in which there is no room for mediocrity. That is why every defeat hurts so much, like the one on Monday in the Varsity Cup semi-final against NWU-Pukke when we let ourselves, our supporters and the University down by not rising to the occasion.

My 150th match as team manager will however always be one of my fondest rugby memories as I was fortunate enough to be part of the group that won the Varsity Cup and USSA title for the first time and the Carlton Cup four times in six finals. I have had an incredible journey that was made even more special by the wonderful people I met along the way.

I would like to thank Mr Kobus van der Walt, Director of TuksSport, Mr Gert van Coller, Executive Manager TuksRugby, Mr Sias van den Berg, chairman of TuksRugby, my friends at TROK, all the coaches I have had the privilege to work with and all the wonderful bunch of young men that went through my hands.

Morris was presented with a commemorative plaque and special edition jersey to mark the occasion.
